Transforming Smart & Playful Cities

Cities are usually not doing a particularly good job of creating spaces for play or encouraging playfulness in the public spaces. In fact, play is often actively being opposed by the authorities.

At the same time, our cities are claimed to be smarter than ever, as they’re drawing on rapidly growing amounts of data. It is, however, often not entirely clear what this means for the people living in these cities.

Who will benefit from smarter cities? Is smarter the same as better? Will it lead to a better quality of life?

We believe that there is a huge unrealized potential and synergy in making our cities both smarter and more playful. Through the playful planning process, the purpose of the city will be renegotiated and seen in a new light. Transforming cities with play will put people in the center, and vastly increase our chances to develop cities that will be smart not despite but because of the people living in it.
